Agarosindhur Community Hospital

The Agarasindhur Community Hospital (ACH) at Pakundia Upzilla in Kishoreganj district was set up in November 2000 with financial assistance of Japanese Embassy. There is a full-time MBBS Doctor, one Physiotherapist, 2 Physiotherapy assistants and one Dental Doctor to provide specialized services in this area. One ophthalmic technologist identifies the cataract patients and refers them to Kishoreganj Eye Hospital for better treatment. Besides, Medicine, ENT, Skin and Gynae Specialists also provide specialized services. Other trained full-time technical staffs and nurses are also there to run different departments of ACH. Among the operational facilities, the Community Hospital has its own O.T, patient-wards, cabins, pathological laboratory, X-ray, eye, physiotherapy and ultra sonogram units, and a low-cost pharmacy. The doctor treats the referred patients from the satellite clinics in outdoor services and refers patients to other specialized medical centers as and when required. The total number of patients treated last year was 5,176 of them 2,213 were female, 1,427 male and 1,539 children. Both the indoor and outdoor clinical services and safe motherhood activities are open for all seeking medical help. The Family Health Card offers the community people a one-year card for Tk 200 and two-year card for Tk 300 each. Under this system, the cardholders are entitled to the following benefits:

• Doctor's Consultation fee is one-half;

• All hospital based clinical service costs is 30% less; and

• All family members of the cardholder are entitled to the above-mentioned benefits.

 

The base Hospital Activities Include:

 
1) Mother and child care
 

A doctor regularly maintains medical check-up and laboratory tests for pregnant mothers including providing safe delivery services and childcare facilities. The hospital also provides family planning methods and makes contraceptives available. Child growth monitoring, immunization along with other regular treatment for children is also maintained regularly.

Anti-natal and Post-natal checkups are regularly maintained. Home visits are made by the female field organizers for all those women who are pregnant or have given birth. Antenatal cares includes regular health and infant checkup including growth monitoring, health education and immunization.
 
2) Outdoor & Indoor Services
 

OPD (Out-Patient Department): A total of 5176 patients of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology & Obstetrics, Eye, ENT, Physiotherapy and Dental were treated here.

IPD (In-Patient Department): 12 patients were given treatment at the IPD including 5 normal deliveries. The IPD at ACH is divided into two parts – Male Ward and Female & Child Ward. IPD has been in operation since 2002. Presently there are 13 beds in IPD. The hospital boasts 24-hour safe delivery services.

 

3) Dental Department

 

Dental Department started it work with well-equipped machine with the help of well-trained dental technologists. Since last year 931 Patients have already been treated where most of them had been suffering from gingivitis, dental cares & pulpits.

4) Eye Care Unit

Primary eye care is provided at this unit by a trained ophthalmic technologist. Cataract and other eye complications are identified and referred to Kishoreganj Eye Hospital located in Kishoreganj Sadar, for better treatment. This unit started from June 2003 to provide primary eye services to community people. One ophthalmic paramedic treats the eye patients. During last year 759 patients from base hospital and 765 from satellite camps received treatment under this unit.

5) Physiotherapy Department

ACH introduced Physiotherapy service this service from April 2004. During the reporting period a total number of 674 patients from base hospital and 349 patients from satellite camps received physiotherapy service from this department.

6 ) In the EPI Service

A total number of 928 children has been immunized with BCG, DPT I, II, III, OPV, and Measles vaccinations at NUK's EPI center while171 others with Vitamin A capsule and 176 HBsAg (Hepatitis B) vaccination. Besides, 187 women (aged between 15 and 49 years) were given TT injections.

The Expanded Program on Immunization is carried out by the GOB for children under 5-years of age. With government assistance a permanent EPI center was set-up at ACH in June 2003. This center remains open every Wednesday of each week. The GOB health assistants in the locality sometimes visit the EPI center and extend their support in organizing the EPI camps at ACH.

7) Investigation Services (laboratory testing)

Pathology : Conducted 915 different types of blood, urine and stool examinations of 493 patients during the last year.

X-Ray : Conducted 716 different types of x-rays including chest, barium-meal of stomach and duodenum, KUB-region, OCG, different types of bones and soft tissues of total 502 patients.

ECG: This hospital started ECG examination with a modern ECG machine and conducted 22 ECG of patients suffering from hypertension and chest pain.

8) Low-Cost Pharmacy

The operation of the low-cost medicine pharmacy is continuing smoothly on cost-recovery basis at ACH. Essential drugs, procured on the basis of a need-based list prepared regularly, are purchased and stocked in the pharmacy. The Satellite Clinics also obtain necessary medicines from the pharmacy and sell them at cost price. This enables the women member and the poor people of the community to have easy access to necessary and quality medicines at low costs.

Ambulance Service

From April 2007 ambulance service has been introduced at ACH. Referred patients of ACH are carried to other hospitals for specialized treatment in this 7-seater ambulance. Besides, services are also provided for carrying emergency patients on rent to hospitals in Dhaka , Mymensingh and other adjoining districts.

9) Ultrasound Unit

Ultrasound unit has been inaugurated on 07 November 2008 and is currently in operation. Till now 25 test has been conducted during the last three months.

10) Day observation

ACH observed the World Brest Feeding week on 7 August 2007 . Total 79 mothers attended in celebrating the day in a befitting manner. Hospital staff shared with the participating mothers the benefits of Brest Feeding for the children.

i. Satellite Camp Service

During the reporting period total camps held: 27; total no of patients treated and counseled: 2038; patients provided ANC: 60; patients referred for treatment to Base Clinic: 112.

Besides, community organizers mobilized the community people to receive medical services from the total 27-satellite camps set-up at the community level, thrice each month. Services provided at these camps include ante-natal and postnatal care, T.T vaccination for pregnant mothers and adolescent girls, primary eye care and identification of cataract patients, growth monitoring, and case referrals to Agarasindhur Hospital for appropriate medical treatment. The paramedics and nurses check-up the patients, diagnose the diseases and provide them with medicines at cost price.

ii.  Advocacy with Community Elite

The ACH staff continues its activity of mobilizing and motivating the community people by holding meetings with community elite requesting them to advice the people of their particular locality to visit the Agarasindhur Community Hospital more often for medical help. During the reporting period, hospital staff met with 45 key community people including local leaders, school teachers, pharmacy owners, diploma doctors and government officials requesting them to inform the people they meet and know about the modern health care facilities available at ACH, the new Departments opened, provision of treatment by Specialized doctors and the benefits of taking advantage of such health care system.
