Egarosindur Community Hospital marked another year of service to Pakundia Upazila, the rural community in Kishoreganj district it has served since being established in October 2000 with support from the Japanese Embassy.
Built from disaster response
The hospital traces its origins to NUK's "Integrated Health & Family Development Project," launched after the devastating flood and cyclone that struck the area in 1998. What began as emergency relief was rebuilt into a permanent institution addressing ongoing gaps in maternal, child, and adolescent girls' health care — a pattern that recurs across several of NUK's health programs.
A typical day at the hospital
The outpatient department remains the hospital's main entry point, operating from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and referring patients onward to antenatal and postnatal care, paediatrics, eye care, physiotherapy, and dental services. Female field organisers continue to make home visits to pregnant women and new mothers who cannot easily travel to the hospital themselves.
Looking forward
NUK continues to apply lessons from Egarosindur's outreach model — particularly the use of female field organisers — to its newer health initiatives, including the eye hospital serving Savar Upazila's migrant garment-worker community.
