Voter Registration Drive Reaches Garment Workers in Savar Industrial Zone

NUK completed a voter registration drive targeting garment workers in the Savar industrial zone, part of its ongoing Voter Registration for Garment Workers program.

The problem this addresses

Garment workers frequently migrate from rural home districts into industrial zones like Savar, Gazipur, and Narayanganj for work, but remain registered to vote — if at all — in districts they may rarely visit. That leaves them with little formal say over the local decisions that most directly shape their daily lives: housing conditions, transport, and local council representation.

How the drive worked

  • On-site registration support organised near factory clusters, timed around national voter list update periods.
  • Documentation assistance for workers struggling to produce proof-of-residence paperwork as recent migrants.
  • Coordination with factory management to allow access without disrupting production schedules.
This outreach builds directly on trust NUK has already established in the area through years of compliance and worker rights programming — workers engaged more readily with registration outreach delivered by an organisation they already recognised.

What's next

NUK plans to expand similar drives to other major RMG industrial zones ahead of upcoming local government elections.
